Historically, life has been harder for minorities. Fighting both poverty and discrimination, minorities had to overcome many obstacles to obtain success. These obstacles continue even today, though there are resources to help them. An example can be found through the minority grant.
What is a minority grant? A minority grant is type of financial aid that is given to qualified minority applicants. What defines a qualified minority applicant? This depends on what the grant is looking for. For instance, a large number of minority grants are designed for people from disadvantaged ethnic groups. Others don’t focus as much on ethnicity, but rather other factors that could classify someone as a ‘minority.’ Grants designed for disabled individuals or battered women are just a couple of examples.
Now, at this point, you might be wondering why eligible applicants would seek minority grants over other types of financial aid, (such as loans or scholarships). Well, first off, minority grants don’t require repayment. This is the case even if you experience a type of failure, whether it’s not finishing school or being forced to close your business.
Secondly, minority grants are not limited to those in academia. With a minority grant, you don’t have to worry about whether or not you have a 4.0 grade-point average. Ultimately, if you have some sort of need and/or you’re starting a business, you could still qualify.
However, this is not to say that there aren’t minority grants aimed for academic purposes. Consider the United Negro College Fund, which gives millions of dollars in college grants to disadvantaged African American students. There is also the Luisa Mallari Fellowship, which is designed to give monies to Asian Americans wishing to study abroad. For Hispanics, there is the Jose Marti Challenge Grant. The list goes on and on.
In conclusion, minority grants offer a great opportunity for disadvantaged groups. Through the grant money, they can do great things for themselves and their communities, whether it’s creating more businesses or becoming a world-class professional, (such as a doctor or a lawyer). Indeed, with minority grants, disadvantaged groups can overcome the statistics to achieve the success their hearts desire.
